What We Do

1

Reading for Joy Outreach Program

"Reading for Joy" is a reading initiative designed to support primary school children in government schools across south Sikkim, particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. The program aims to foster a love for reading by providing access to diverse and engaging reading materials, along with a variety of interactive activities. By encouraging reading for pleasure, the initiative seeks to improve literacy development, boost academic performance, and enhance long-term learning outcomes among children who may otherwise have limited exposure to quality reading resources.

2

Youth Capacity Building

Our outreach team comprises local youths who have received in-house training and mentorship. They have garnered immense experience working with community members, and a deep understanding of the unique socio-cultural and economic challenges that impede literacy and reading for joy amongst children in rural Sikkim.

3

Rural School Visits

To reach as many children as possible, the ‘Reading for Joy’ team conducts monthly outreach visits to government schools in remote parts of south Sikkim, working closely with school administrators to promote reading and writing. The initiative also includes a weekly ‘Science program’, funded by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, designed to spark curiosity and foster a scientific mindset in children. In addition to curating an activity-based curriculum for primary schools, the program trains educators, facilitators, and volunteers to effectively lead reading and writing sessions.

Why Your Support Matters

Children from remote and underserved communities in south Sikkim often lack access to diverse, engaging books and consistent reading opportunities.

With your help, we can:

Provide quality reading materials
Organize weekly reading and science programs
Train educators and volunteers
Visit schools in remote areas every month
Build a culture of joyful, consistent reading
